Why your website should quote, not just take enquiries

An enquiry form hands the work back to you at nine at night. A site that quotes off your own price list finishes the job while you are still on the tools.

The enquiry form is a to-do list

Most tradie websites end in the same place: a form with a name, a number and a box that says "tell us about your job". It looks like the site is doing something. What it actually does is write you a note.

Your customer fills it in at lunchtime. You read it at six, between dinner and the invoices. You ring back the next morning, play phone tag for a day, and by the time you have a price together they have had two others.

None of that is the website failing. It is the website doing exactly what it was built to do, which is pass the question on to you.

What a site that quotes does instead

You already price most of your jobs the same way every time. A tap washer, a downlight swap, a hot water service of a given size: you ask two or three questions on the phone and the figure follows from the answers.

A site that quotes asks your customer those same questions and prices the job off your own price list, under your name, while they are still on the page. They get a fixed figure with the line items on it. You get the quote in your inbox with everything you would have asked on the phone already answered.

The jobs you would never price sight unseen stay as enquiries. The site says so, and asks for a call or a photo instead of guessing.

Why it is fixed, not a range

A range is a figure you have promised to revise. Your customer reads the low end, you charge somewhere near the high end, and the conversation that follows is the one every tradie dreads.

A quote off your own list is the price you would have given anyway. If you would not stand behind a figure for a job without seeing it, that job does not go on the list, and the site does not price it.

Where to start

Write down the five jobs you price most often and the questions you ask before you give a figure for each. If the answers decide the price, those jobs can be quoted online. That list is most of what a quoting build runs on.
